History Formation of the Society The Medico-Legal Society of Ireland was founded in August 1956 following a meeting held in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin . It was agreed that a need then existed for a society in which doctors and lawyers would meet and discuss topical issues of mutual interest. The meeting was called by Dr J.P. Brennan, Coroner, who was elected as the first President of the Society. Others present at that initial meeting included Mr. Justice Murnaghan who took the chair, Dr. Patrick Meenan BL, Dr. Maurice Hickey, Mr. Michael Leech, Solicitor, Mr. L. Trant McCarthy, Solicitor, Dr. C.S.P. Hamilton and Dr. Brennan. The then Chief Justice of Ireland , Mr. Justice Conor A. Maguire became the first Patron of the Society. A notable event in the early years was a reception hosted by the Society in 1957 to mark the visit to Ireland of the American Bar Association, led by Earl Warren, then Chief Justice of the United States of America. 50th Anniversary - 2006 A conference with the dual themes of “ Bioethics” and” Acquired Infections” was held to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Society on 7th October 2006. Hosted by the Attorney General, Rory Brady SC at Dublin Castle, the 120 delegates and guests present heard many eminent speakers on these topics and members of the audience contributed to the general discussion at the end of the formal sessions. The Gala Dinner that evening was enjoyed by 160 members and guests in the splendid surroundings of the State Apartments at Dublin Castle. The President of the Society, The Hon. Mr Justice Peter Kelly welcomed members and their guests including members of the Northern Ireland Medico-Legal Society. Presentations were made to Dr. John Fleetwood, a founder member of the Society and the original “Editor of Debates”, to the Patron of the Society, Dr. Desmond McGrath, to the Society’s Administrator (also Past President) Ms. Mary McMorrough Murphy BL and to our host at Dublin Castle, Attorney General, Rory Brady SC. The First Joint meeting of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Medico-Legal Society was held at Farmleigh, Phoenix Park, Dublin on 24th January 2009, with the theme of “Medicine, Law and Human Rights”. The inaugural meeting of the Society was held in the Dolphin Hotel, Dublin on the 29th October, 1956 when a paper entitled “The Mind and Crime” was delivered by Judge J.A. McCarthy, a Vice-President of the Society.
